Today: 1 John 2
In today’s reading, we learn some very important information. There will be many antichrists and we learn from where they will come:
Children, it is the last hour! As you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. From this we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But by going out they made it plain that none of them belongs to us. 1 John 2:18-19
Here, John is not necessarily talking about THE antichrist, i.e., the antichrist that will be the last and final one. Here, what he is conveying to us is that there will be many and repeated antichrists throughout history. He is also revealing that all the current day are “the last hour”. These ‘lesser’ antichrists and last hours are foreshadowing’s of the final end times that are to come.
It’s important to notice from where these antichrists come. They come from among the Apostles, i.e., the Church, but they do not remain in the Church. The antichrists break from the church, which is the bride and Christ and one flesh with him. They are thereby “against Christ”. That sounds suspiciously like Protestantism. We, as Catholics, must remember that this does not mean individual Protestants are bad. In fact, most Protestants are probably ignorant of this spiritual dynamic. However, it does mean that the root from which Protestantism grows is not from the true vine but another, impure source.
